Chimneys stay-at-home order

The Secret of Chimneys

The Chimneys stay-at-home order is Superintendent Battle’s temporary restriction on guests leaving Chimneys during the investigation of Prince Michael’s murder. First presented as a practical measure to ensure attendance at the inquest, it also preserves Battle’s control over the household while he pursues evidence; its eventual lifting marks a shift from compulsory confinement to an informal request that selected guests stay.

The Stated Purpose

When Mr Fish questions the order as a sign of police sluggishness, Anthony Cade explains that everyone is expected to attend the inquest the following morning. That gives the restriction an immediate, administrative justification: the household must be present for the proceedings. Mr Fish presses further, asking whether Lord Caterham’s guests are suspected, but Anthony’s dry response does not confirm that they are.

The order therefore leaves the guests uncertain about their status. Its visible rationale is attendance, not an announced accusation, and the distinction matters: the restriction gathers the household without openly identifying anyone as a suspect.

Why the Restriction Continues

After the inquest has ended, Mr Fish points out that Prince Michael’s body is to be taken to London and that the death is being publicly attributed to heart failure. Yet the guests are still not allowed to leave. He adds that George Lomax has no explanation and refers him to Superintendent Battle, making clear that the restriction has outlasted its original public rationale.

Anthony, who has been away, answers that Battle has something in reserve and that keeping everyone at Chimneys appears essential to his plan. The order thus acquires a second function: it maintains the investigator’s ability to manage the scene and its occupants while the inquiry remains active. The gap between the official explanation and the continued confinement makes the household’s uncertainty part of the investigation’s atmosphere.

Release and Voluntary Stay

Later, Battle announces that anyone wishing to leave may do so. He nevertheless asks Lord Caterham to extend an informal invitation for the guests to remain, specifically including Anthony and Mrs Revel. The change is precise: the police no longer compel everyone to stay, but Battle still seeks the practical advantage of having important people close at hand.

The conversation immediately returns to missing evidence. Asked about the revolver used to shoot Prince Michael, Battle says he has not found it and believes it must be somewhere in the house or grounds; he proposes sending boys to search. He also recalls the bundle of letters and identifies the letter headed “Chimneys” as probably the last written, with coded instructions for finding the diamond. The order’s end therefore does not mean the investigation is over: confinement gives way to voluntary cooperation as Battle continues searching for the gun and interpreting the letters.
